Position Overview
The Controller will work closely with the VP of Finance and the broader Business Team, overseeing all functions of the accounting department. This key leadership role is responsible for ensuring timely and accurate production of financial statements—including monthly, quarterly, and year-end reporting.
The Controller will establish and maintain the company’s accounting policies, procedures, and controls, ensuring compliance and consistency across the organization. Responsibilities also include preparing financial reports, analyzing results, and delivering actionable insights and recommendations to company leadership.
As a strategic finance partner, the Controller will lead initiatives to enhance processes, systems, and overall financial operations. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a fast-paced, mission-driven business focused on sustainable farming and agriculture.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the accounting leadership team in managing and guiding the organization’s accounting functions.
- Prepare and ensure the accuracy of consolidated GAAP financial statements.
- Ensure all tax-related information is precise and submitted to CPA firms on time to support tax filings.
- Provide reporting support, including standard GAAP financial reports, activity based reports, private placement memorandum updates, investor reports, and annual audit schedules.
- Manage month-end and year-end closing processes and support the Junior Controller in overseeing daily accounting activities.
- Review multi-entity trial balances, working in both accrual and cash basis accounting.
- Oversee and review monthly financial statements, journal entries, and account reconciliations.
- Approve accounts payable payment runs, cash receipts, income charges, and weekly liquidity reports.
- Supervise inter-company billing cycles and review debt & interest calculations on loans.
- Manage fixed assets, including acquisitions, dispositions, depreciation, and property tax returns.
- Analyze general ledgers for unusual items or errors and make corrections as needed.
- Enhance productivity through automation and improved accounting processes.
- Supervise the accounting team, offering support and resources for professional development.
- Stay current with industry trends through ongoing professional development and training.
- Work both independently and collaboratively to meet organizational goals.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance is required.
- CPA certification or CPA eligibility is preferred.
- A minimum of 6 years of relevant experience, including 3 years in a management role leading a team.
- Expertise in GAAP accounting.
- Experience leading or managing an ERP implementation. (Sage, NetSuite, etc)
- Proven track record of process improvement, systems automation, and driving operational efficiency.
- Familiarity with machine learning or data automation tools is a plus.
- Experience in public accounting, particularly in audit, is a plus.
